Washington, Dec 12 (IANS) Anna Hazare’s fasts in opposition to corruption in India just made it to Time magazine’s top ten world-news stories headed by ‘The Arab Spring Blooms in Tunisia and Egypt  with ‘The Killing of ‘Osama bin Laden’ next.

Listing  Anna Hazare’s Starvation Fasts Rock India, in the tenth place, the US magazine said: ‘In a year using more than its share of protests globally, probably the most remarkable act of dissent were held in India, in which the nation’s dominating coalition took flak for a host of corruption matters implicating a large number of major politicians.’

Anna Hazare, a 74-year-old activist having a Gandhian air, commanded something of the Mahatma’s aura when he embarked on a number of hunger strikes in protest of the graft that his followers say pervades all strata of Indian society,  it noted.

During his speech he said Gujarat has plenty of tourist attraction and heritage sites. Only Kuchht District alone has more places worth to visit then whole Rajasthan. He asked NRG community to promote tourism to Gujarat. He said: “I don’t need Dollars from you.. Just convince 5 non-Indian families to visit Gujarat every year”.

Gujarat tourism has been ignored since long. Tourism can bring fortune to Gujarat same as other industries and can add one more feather to growth of Gujarat.

In future those Indian citizens who acquire foreign citizenship  (PIO’s) on or after June 1 2010 will have to submit declaration of renunciation of their Indian citizenship.

Persons of Indian origin (PIOs) will now have to formally renounce their citizenship and surrender their Indian passport after acquiring foreign citizenship, according to new rules circulated by the Indian high commission..

Persons of Indian origin  PIO who have already acquired foreign citizenship until 31 May 2010 will not be required to pay renunciation fees of USD 175.00, he/she will be required to pay Miscellaneous fees of USD 20.00 when getting the old Indian passport cancelled/surrendered.

On surrender of their Indian passport, PIOs will be issued a ‘surrender certificate’ which they will have to produce when seeking Indian visa or PIO card or OCI (overseas citizenship of India) card, according to the new rules.

It is a punishable offence under the Indian Passport Act 1967, to apply for an Indian passport, continue to hold an Indian passport, get an Indian passport re-issued or travel on an Indian passport after acquiring foreign citizenship.

There are stringent penalties for foreign nationals to keep Indian passports. “This is also applicable to those Indian citizens who acquired foreign citizenship,” the statement said.

The new rules also stipulate heavy penalty for retaining and travelling on Indian passports after getting foreign citizenship.

To attract foreign investment in India, Government is offering several facilities to Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Corporate Bodies (OCBs).
